As a young entrepreneur with a newborn son, Jeff Tintle needed an alternative to his home office when the needs of his growing family began to overtake the space allocated to run his print and electronic publishing business.
He found it in the appropriately named “Home Office Alternative” at the Bridgeworks Enterprise Center.
“What has been nice about being here is the obvious – I can get out of the house and I have a professional business address,” said Tintle, founder and owner of Thrive, LLC, d/b/a Thrive Media, which publishes two magazines, “Lifestyles over 50″ and “Lehigh Valley Family,” as well as online sites for both magazines.
For Tintle, both the price and the available warehouse distribution space were ideal for his fledgling company. It allowed him to have the magazines delivered to Bridgeworks, where his distribution team could pick them up on a flexible schedule for delivery throughout the Lehigh Valley region.
“The Home Office Alternative (HOA) spaces are great for a company that is looking for an inexpensive place to get started without being part of a formal incubation program,” said Anthony Durante, Economic Development Specialist for Allentown Economic Development Corporation. “It also makes a great remote office for a company that has just one or two employees in the region and doesn’t want to or need to pay Class A Office prices.”
HOA clients have access to shared amenities like the co-working space, the kitchenette and the conference rooms, while enjoying the use of a private and secure office for their business, Durante said.
“It’s a step up in security from the open office concept that the co-working space provides,” he continued. “Some people are more comfortable in that environment while other don’t mind sharing space.”
Tintle began his business while working as a commercial lender for a local bank. As a young man growing up in an aging neighborhood, he enjoyed speaking with and helping out his older neighbors and it gave him an appreciation for their needs, he said. “Lifestyles over 50″ was created in 2007 and is dedicated to the more active portion of the older generation but also includes critical content that help seniors – and their adult children – make decisions for the future.
Stories on topics such as how to select the proper residential care and medical providers for older adults share space with articles on activities and events they can enjoy – often with other family members, friends and even grandchildren. In response to client and advertiser requests, he also began offering corporate video services and marketing assistance.
“Lehigh Valley Family” was created about five years ago and focuses on activities and events of interest to younger adults with their own children.
This year he introduced a social media aggregator that helps clients promote news, articles and other material aimed at their own markets in a web-friendly manner that will boost online visibility.
The flexibility of the HOA has allowed Tintle to run the magazine as well as offer educational programs for clients and the public in the available conference rooms and other open spaces, he said.
“Quite frankly, I love the location. I go to Bethlehem frequently, I am in Allentown a lot, I go to Whitehall … and if I have to go to Easton, I can hop right on Interstate 78,” Tintle said. “And I think it’s neat what they are doing here with the Hive 4A (co-working space) and Makerspace.”
Tintle recently purchased a building in Wescosville to accommodate his growing staff and business needs – Thrive Media now employs about a half-dozen people, including Jeff Tintle Sr, who recently retired from his job as COO of a Hatfield manufacturing company and has joined his son as a sales specialist for the new online advertising/content products. They expect to move into the new quarters in October.
But Tintle says the time and support received during his stay at Bridgeworks HOA has been invaluable.
“It’s a great location, a great price and a great value,” he said. “I will miss being here and I have valued my time here.”
